How Do You Make Variants in Figma?

Last updated on November 26, 2022 @ 1:46 pm

In Figma, you can create variants of any object on the canvas. For example, you might want to create different versions of a button for different states, such as hover, active, and focus.

Or, you might want to create different versions of an icon to be used on different devices.

To create a variant of an object in Figma:

  1. Select the object on the canvas.
  2. Click the Create Variant button in the Inspector.
  3. In the Create Variant dialog, enter a name for the variant.
  4. Click the Create button.
  5. You can also create variants of objects using the New Variant menu item.

Creating Variants in Figma

Figma is a great design tool because it allows you to easily create variants of any object on the canvas.

PRO TIP: Variants in Figma are a great way to quickly create different versions of your designs. However, they can also be a bit tricky to work with. If you’re not careful, you can easily end up with a lot of unwanted variations. Here are a few tips to help you avoid that:

1. When creating variants, be sure to start with a clean slate. That means creating a new frame or canvas for each variation. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a lot of extra clutter in your design file.

2. When working with variants, take advantage of Figma’s layers panel. This will help you keep track of which elements are different between the variants.

3. Be careful when deleting variants. If you delete a variant that contains elements that are different from the others, those elements will be lost forever. So, make sure you really want to delete a variant before you do it!
