How Does Shopify Calculate Product Weight?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 10:21 pm

Shopify is a popular ecommerce platform that allows businesses to sell online. One of the key features of Shopify is that it can calculate the weight of products automatically. This is a handy feature for businesses that sell products of different weights, as it means they don’t have to enter the weight manually for each product.

There are two ways that Shopify can calculate the weight of products:

1. The first way is by using the weight field in the product settings.

This field is where you enter the weight of the product in grams, kilograms, ounces, or pounds. Once you’ve entered the weight, Shopify will automatically calculate the shipping cost based on the product’s weight and the shipping destination.

PRO TIP: If you are considering using Shopify to sell products, be aware that the platform uses a default product weight when calculating shipping costs. This default weight may not be accurate for your products, which could result in overcharging your customers for shipping. We recommend that you confirm the accuracy of the default product weight with Shopify before using the platform to sell products.

2. The second way is by using the dimensions field in the product settings.

This field is where you enter the length, width, and height of the product in centimeters or inches. Once you’ve entered the dimensions, Shopify will automatically calculate the product’s weight and then calculate the shipping cost based on the product’s weight and the shipping destination.

The advantage of using Shopify to calculate shipping costs is that it can save you time and money. By having Shopify do all the work for you, you can be sure that your shipping costs are accurate and up-to-date.
