Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. Lütke, a German citizen, originally moved to Canada to work on developing the code for Shopify. Weinand and Lake were childhood friends who later became business partners.

In 2006, Shopify launched its platform as a hosted solution.

PRO TIP: Shopify delivery is a great way to get your products to your customers, but there are some things you should know before using it. First, Shopify delivery is not available in all areas. If you’re not sure if your area is covered, please check with Shopify first. Second, Shopify delivery can be slow. If you’re in a hurry to get your product to your customer, you may want to consider another shipping method.

By 2009, Shopify was processing over $1 million worth of transactions per month. This grew to $100 million per month by early 2012. In 2013, Shopify had about 60,000 active stores using its platform with total sales of $846 million.

In 2014, Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange and Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol “SHOP”.
