Is Elasticsearch owned by AWS?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 6:35 pm

Elasticsearch is a popular open source search engine that is owned by Amazon. Elasticsearch is a key part of Amazon’s cloud services and is used by millions of users around the world. Elasticsearch is released under the Apache License 2.0, which means that it is free to use, modify, and distribute.

PRO TIP: There is no definitive answer to this question as ownership of Elasticsearch is complicated and often unclear. However, it is generally agreed that Amazon Web Services (AWS) does not own Elasticsearch. While AWS does have a controlling interest in the company that provides the Elasticsearch software, it is not the outright owner. This means that if you are using Elasticsearch on AWS, you may not have the same level of control or security as you would if you were using a self-hosted solution.

However, Elasticsearch is also a profitable business for Amazon. In 2017, Elasticsearch was the 10th most popular open source software project on GitHub and generated $79 million in revenue.
