Is RDS free in AWS?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 6:14 pm

In theory, RDS is free for AWS customers. However, there are a few caveats. First, each RDS instance requires at least 1GB of memory. Second, AWS charges for the managed compute time spent running RDS instances.

Finally, Amazon charges for data storage in RDS instances. All of these charges can add up quickly.

PRO TIP: There is no such thing as a “free” RDS instance in AWS. However, there are a number of ways to get discounted or free RDS instances, depending on your usage and needs.

In practice, RDS is not always free. For example, the 1GB of memory requirement can be a major roadblock for some organizations.

And, even if an organization can meet that requirement, AWS charges for managed compute time and data storage. So, while RDS is technically free, it’s not always cost-effective.
