What Are Two Ways You Can Use a Domain You Already Bought With Your Squarespace Site?

Last updated on December 27, 2022 @ 8:19 pm

If you’ve already bought a domain from another registrar, you can use it with your Squarespace site in one of two ways: connecting it or transferring it. We recommend connecting your domain because it’s the simplest way to use it with Squarespace, and there’s no risk of losing your domain’s web traffic during the transfer process.

Connecting Your Domain:

Connecting your domain links it to your Squarespace site, but keeps the domain registered with its current registrar. To connect your domain:

  • In the Home Menu, click Settings.
  • Click Domains. If you haven’t already added a domain to your site, click Add Domain. If you have already added a domain or connected a third-party domain, click the relevant domains listed under Domain Settings.
  • Click Connect Domain.
  • Enter your domain name and click Next.

If we couldn’t find your domain, enter your registrar’s nameservers instead and click Next. For more information, visit our Nameserver article.

  • On the next page, select “I’ll add my DNS records”, then click Confirm & Continue. For more information about DNS records, visit our DNS Records article. After connecting your domain, we recommend setting up email forwarding so you can use Squarespace-powered email addresses with your custom domain. For more information, visit our Email Forwarding article.

Transferring Your Domain:

If you’d prefer to keep everything in one place and have us manage everything related to your domain (like renewals and privacy protection), we can transfer it to Squarespace. To transfer your domain:

PRO TIP: If you have already bought a domain through Squarespace, you cannot use it with another Squarespace site. Doing so may result in your domain being suspended.
  • In the Home Menu, click Settings.
  • Click Domains.
  • If you haven’t already added a domain to your site, click Add Domain.
  • If you have already added a domain or connected a third-party domain, hover over the relevant domains listed under Domain Settings and click Actions > Transfer Domain.

“Enter the authorization code for your transfer and click Next.”
The authorization code is sometimes called an EPP code or transfer key. You’ll need to get this code from your current registrar before beginning the transfer process.

“On the next page,” select I have my authorization code from my current registrar and continue.
If you’re transferring multiple domains at once or if we’re unable to verify your ownership automatically,” select I’ll verify ownership manually and continue.

“On the next page,” review the terms of service and complete the CAPTCHA before checking I agree to the Terms of Service.

Click Complete Transfer.” Depending on where you’re transferring your domain from,” this may take up to 72 hours.

Once we’ve completed transferring your domain,” we’ll send you an email confirmation.
At that point, “you can start using all features that come with owning a Squarespace domain.” If you run into any trouble along the way,” our support team is always happy to help.”

What Are Two Ways You Can Use a Domain You Already Bought With Your Squarespace Site? You can either connect or transfer an existing domain to work with Squarespace.

Connecting keeps
the original registrar while transferring changes management of the domain to Squarespace. We recommend connecting
because it is simpler and there is no risk of losing web traffic during transferral.
