What does Linode use for virtualization?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 1:17 pm

Linode is a cloud-based hosting company with a focus on virtualization. They offer both cloud and bare metal hosting, and provide a wide range of virtualization options, including their own proprietary Linode Virtualization Platform.

PRO TIP: Linode uses KVM for virtualization. KVM is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). It consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko, that provides the core virtualization infrastructure and a processor specific module, kvm-intel.ko or kvm-amd.ko. KVM also requires a modified QEMU although work is underway to upstream the required changes.

Linode’s Virtualization Platform is based on OpenStack, and provides a variety of features, including live migration, snapshot management, and container support.
