What Is a LUT in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 11:17 pm

A LUT, or Look Up Table, is a file used by image editing software to convert color values in an image from one color space to another. LUTs can be used to change the color of an image, or to improve the color accuracy of an image.

LUTs are often used to convert images from one color space to another, such as from sRGB to Adobe RGB. LUTs can also be used to improve the color accuracy of an image. For example, if an image is edited in sRGB and then converted to Adobe RGB, the colors in the Adobe RGB image will be more accurate than if the image was edited in Adobe RGB without using a LUT.

LUTs can be created using different methods, such as by using a color management system or by using a graphics program such as Photoshop. LUTs can also be purchased from third-party companies.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, LUTs (lookup tables) can be confusing and overwhelming. A LUT is simply a color grading preset that can be applied to an image or video. However, there are many different types of LUTs and each type can produce different results. It is important to experiment with different LUTs to find the one that best suits your needs.

When using a LUT, it is important to select the correct LUT for the specific color space that you are working in. For example, if you are working in sRGB, you should not use a LUT designed for Adobe RGB.

Likewise, if you are working in Adobe RGB, you should not use a LUT designed for sRGB. Doing so will result in inaccurate colors.

There are many different types of LUTs available, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The type of LUT that you use will depend on your specific needs.
