What Is a Variant in Shopify?

Last updated on October 2, 2022 @ 1:14 am

A variant in Shopify is a product option that can be selected by the customer during the checkout process, such as size or color. Each variant has a unique SKU (stock keeping unit) and can have its own price, weight, and inventory level.

Shopify uses variants to keep track of all the different types of products that you sell in your store. For example, if you sell t-shirts, each t-shirt size (small, medium, large, etc.)

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Shopify, do not attempt to modify variants without first consulting an expert. Incorrectly modifying variants can result in lost data and/or decreased store performance.

and color (red, blue, green, etc.) would be a variant.

You can add as many variants as you need for each product in your Shopify store. For example, if you sell shoes, you might have variants for size (6, 7, 8), color (black, brown, tan), and width (narrow, medium, wide).

When a customer adds a product to their cart from your Shopify store, they’ll be able to select the variant that they want. For example, if they’re buying a t-shirt, they’ll be able to choose the size and color that they want.
