What Is Canonical URL in Shopify?

A canonical URL is the URL of the page that Google thinks is most representative from a set of duplicate pages on your site. For example, if you have URLs for both http://example.com/products/red-shoes and http://example.com/products/red-shoes?variant=123, Google sees these as two separate pages. To consolidate its indexing properties, Google chooses one URL as canonical.

If you don’t explicitly specify a canonical URL for a page, Google will usually pick one for you. However, we recommend that you specify your own canonical URLs to avoid any potential confusion.

How to find your canonical URL in Shopify

There are a few ways to find your canonical URL in Shopify. The easiest way is to use the Shopify Analyzer.

This tool will automatically scan your store and tell you what your canonical URL is. If you don’t have the Shopify Analyzer installed, you can also find your canonical URL by going to Settings > Checkout > Order processing > Additional scripts. In the box labeled “Canonical URL”, you’ll see the URL that Shopify is using for your store.
