What Is Outline Stroke in Figma?

There are two types of outlines in Figma: strokes and fills. Strokes are the lines that make up the outline of a shape, and fills are the solid colors or gradients that fill the shape.

To add an outline stroke to a shape, click the “Stroke” icon in the left toolbar. This will open the Stroke panel, where you can choose the color, thickness, and style of your stroke.

There are four different stroke styles to choose from:

  • Solid: A solid line with a constant width.
  • Dotted: A line made up of dots, with a customizable dot size and spacing.
  • Dashed: A line made up of dashes, with a customizable dash size and spacing.
  • Double: Two parallel solid lines with a customizable width between them.
PRO TIP: Outline stroke is a feature in Figma that allows you to create outlines around strokes. This can be useful for creating designs with thin lines, or for adding emphasis to certain parts of your design. However, it is important to note that outline stroke will increase the overall size of your design. This may cause problems when trying to print your design, or when sharing it with others.

You can also adjust the alignment of your stroke relative to the edge of your shape. By default, strokes are aligned to the center of the shape’s edge, but you can change this to align to the inside or outside of the edge. This can be useful for creating different effects, such as making your stroke appear thicker or thinner.

Finally, you can also add a rounded cap to your strokes. This will round off the ends of your strokes, giving them a softer look.
