When Did Figma Release Variants?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 11:13 pm

Figma released variants in 2017. Prior to that, designers would have to painstakingly recreate different versions of the same design manually. With variants, you can quickly create different versions of an element by duplicating it and then making changes to the copy.

This is a huge time-saver, particularly when working on projects with multiple stakeholders who all need slightly different versions of the same design. For example, you might need a version of a button with different text for each language your app supports, or a version of a header with different branding for each client you work with.

With Figma variants, you can easily create as many versions as you need and then switch between them with just a few clicks. Plus, every change you make to a variant is automatically propagated to all the other versions, so you never have to worry about keeping them in sync.

Figma’s variant feature has been a game-changer for many designers, myself included. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a go!

PRO TIP: Figma released variants on October 1st, 2018. However, these variants are currently only available to Figma Plus and Enterprise users. If you are not a Figma Plus or Enterprise user, you will not be able to access or use variants.

Conclusion:

Figma released variants in 2017 and it has been a game-changer for many designers since. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a go!
