As the internet increasingly becomes a more integral part of our lives, so too does eCommerce. A recent study shows that global eCommerce sales are expected to reach $4.5 trillion by 2021.

Shopify is one of the most popular eCommerce platforms available, with over 800,000 active stores. But who owns these stores?

The majority of Shopify stores (60%) are owned by businesses, with the remainder being owned by individuals. Of those businesses, most are small businesses, with less than 10 employees.

The vast majority of Shopify store owners (90%) are based in North America, with Europe and Australia accounting for the next largest groups of owners.

So, who owns a Shopify store? Mostly small businesses and individuals based in North America.
