Why can’t I move layers in Illustrator?

Illustrator is a vector drawing program that allows users to create vector illustrations, logos, and cartoons. When working with layers, it can be difficult to move or delete layers. There are a few reasons why layers might be difficult to move or delete in Illustrator:

Layers can be locked: Layers can be locked so that they can’t be deleted or moved. If a layer is locked, you’ll need to unlock it before you can move or delete it.

To lock a layer, select the layer and click the lock button ( ).

Layers can be nested: Layers can be nested so that they’re contained within other layers. If a layer is nested, you can’t see or edit the contents of the layer above it.

PRO TIP: If you are having trouble moving layers in Illustrator, it is likely because the layers are locked. To unlock the layer, click on the lock icon next to the layer name.
