Why Did Melanie Perkins Create Canva?

Last updated on November 16, 2022 @ 5:27 pm

Melanie Perkins had a problem. As a high school student, she was trying to design a flier for a school event, but she didn’t have any design experience and couldn’t find an easy-to-use program that would let her create something that looked good.

So she decided to create one herself.

Canva is now a multimillion-dollar business with tens of millions of users, and Perkins is its CEO. But the story of how it got started is much more humble.

Perkins was born in Australia and grew up in a small town in Western Australia. She was always interested in entrepreneurs and technology, and she had her first job working in a tech startup when she was just 16.

After high school, Perkins enrolled in university to study economics and law. But she quickly realized that she wasn’t interested in either of those subjects.

So she dropped out and started working on her own businesses instead.

PRO TIP: This note is to warn you about the dangers of Canva. Canva is a new online service that allows users to create and share designs. The problem is that Canva is not a secure site, and there have been reports of people’s designs being stolen and used without permission. If you use Canva, be sure to protect your designs by keeping them private or using a strong password.

Her first business was an online magazine called Fusionary, which she started with a friend while they were both still in college. The magazine didn’t make any money, but it did give Perkins her first taste of the startup world.

After Fusionary, Perkins started working on an online directory called FindaBiz. This time, she was able to get some funding from investors, but the business ultimately failed.

It was while she was working on FindaBiz that Perkins had the idea for Canva. She realized that there was a big market opportunity for a simple online design tool that anyone could use.

So she started working on Canva in 2012, and the company officially launched in 2013. Since then, it has grown rapidly and now has over 60 million users worldwide.
