Why Is Squarespace Script Disabled?

Last updated on December 25, 2022 @ 4:54 pm

As a general rule, we recommend leaving Squarespace Scripts disabled. Scripts can negatively impact your site’s performance, and they’re a common source of site issues. Our engineering and support teams are familiar with the most common scripts, so we can provide more accurate troubleshooting if you encounter an issue.

There are, however, a few instances where you may need to use a script on your site:

  • If you’re using a third-party service that requires a script, like Google Analytics or Typekit.
  • If you’re using a custom integration built by Squarespace or one of our Expert Partners.
  • If you’re comfortable editing code and want to add custom functionality to your site.

Note: If you do need to use a script on your site, we recommend adding it to your site Header Code Injection instead of your site Footer Code Injection. This helps your site load faster.

PRO TIP: If you are trying to access a Squarespace website and you see the message “Squarespace Script Disabled”, this means that the website owner has disabled scripting on their site. This can be done for a variety of reasons, but it usually means that the site is not intended for public view. If you are trying to view a Squarespace site that has been disabled, you will not be able to see any of the content or interact with any of the features.
