Can You Outline in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 12:22 am

As a general rule, you can outline text in Photoshop by creating a new layer above the text layer and drawing your outline on that new layer. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when doing this.

First, when you create the new layer for your outline, make sure it is set to “Normal” mode rather than “Multiply” or “Screen.” Otherwise, your outline will be partially transparent and may not look the way you want it to.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that attempting to outline in Photoshop can result in file corruption and data loss. We strongly advise against it.

Second, use a hard-edged brush for your outline. Softer-edged brushes will create a feathered edge around your text, which may not be what you’re going for.

Finally, make sure the color of your brush is different from the color of the text itself. If they are too similar, it will be difficult to see the outline.

With these tips in mind, outlining text in Photoshop is a fairly simple process. Just remember to create a new layer, use a hard-edged brush, and choose a contrasting color for your outline.
