Do You Own Your Domain Name With Wix?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 2:22 am

When you buy a domain name from Wix, you don’t actually own it. You’re simply paying Wix to use their platform to create your website. This means that if you ever want to leave Wix, you won’t be able to take your domain name with you.

While this may not seem like a big deal at first, it can actually be quite problematic. For example, let’s say you build up a large following on your Wix-based website. Then one day, you decide to leave Wix and switch to another platform.

GREAT NEWS:

Exciting update! We've collaborated with Wix to offer WBI users with a free plan for all website creation needs - Explore the details here.

If you can’t take your domain name with you, all of your hard work building up your brand will be for nothing. Your followers will have to find your new website on a completely different domain, which will be very confusing for them.

PRO TIP: If you own your domain name with Wix, be aware that Wix may delete your website if it violates their terms of service. Additionally, Wix may terminate your account at any time for any reason.

Worse yet, if you don’t redirect your old domain to your new website, anyone who goes to your old website will simply see a blank page (or worse, an error message). This will not only frustrate your followers, but it will also damage your brand and make it much harder for people to find your new website.

In short, not owning your domain name can be a real hassle, and it’s something you should definitely take into consideration before signing up for a Wix account.

Conclusion:
While Wix is a great platform for creating websites, you should be aware that you don’t actually own your domain name when you use their service. This can be problematic if you ever want to leave Wix, as you won’t be able to take your domain name with you.
