How Do I Add an Adjustment Layer to Just One Layer in Photoshop?

In Photoshop, an adjustment layer is a layer that contains a filter effect. Adjustment layers let you apply image adjustments non-destructively. That is, you can always go back and edit the adjustment later or delete the adjustment layer without damaging the image.

There are two types of adjustment layers: layer adjustments and global adjustments. Layer adjustments only affect the layer they’re applied to. Global adjustments affect all layers beneath them in the layer stack.

To add an adjustment layer to just one layer:

1. Select the layer you want to affect. 2. Click the Add Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and choose an adjustment from the list.

3. Photoshop adds an adjustment layer above the selected layer, and a clipping mask linking the two layers. The clipping mask hides everything in the image except for the area of effect for the selected layer.

Adding an adjustment layer is a great way to non-destructively edit your images in Photoshop. Layer adjustments let you apply image adjustments to just one layer, while global adjustments affect all layers beneath them in the stack.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, adding an adjustment layer to just one layer in Photoshop can result in unwanted changes to other layers in the image. Be sure to check the layer mask options and create a new layer mask if necessary to avoid making unwanted changes.
