Converting NEF files to Photoshop
NEF files are raw image files that are produced by Nikon cameras. You can convert these files to Photoshop format in order to edit them.
Instructions
1. Connect your Nikon camera to your computer using the USB cable that came with the camera. Turn on the camera.
2. Click “Start” and then “My Computer.” Double-click on the icon for your Nikon camera.
3. Click on the folder that contains your NEF files.
Click on the first NEF file, hold down the “Ctrl” key and click on each additional NEF file that you want to convert to Photoshop format. This will highlight all of the files that you want to convert.
4. Right-click on one of the highlighted NEF files and select “Copy” from the pop-up menu.
Open a new folder on your computer and right-click inside of it. Select “Paste” from the pop-up menu.
5. Download and install a file converter program if you do not have one already installed on your computer. Free file converter programs are available online (see Resources).
6. Launch the file converter program.
Click on the “Input File” button and browse to the folder that contains your NEF files. Select the first NEF file, hold down the “Ctrl” key and click on each additional NEF file that you want to convert. Click on the “Output File” button and browse to the location where you want to save the converted files. Select a file name and extension for the converted files.
7. Click on the “Convert” button in the file converter program window.

Click on “File” and then “Open.” Browse to the location of the converted NEF files and double-click on one of them to open it in Photoshop.
PRO TIP: NEF files are not compatible with Photoshop. If you attempt to open an NEF file in Photoshop, you will receive an error message.
