How do I create an SVG icon in Illustrator?

Creating SVG icons in Illustrator is a simple process that can be done with a few basic steps.

First, create a new document in Illustrator and set the size to the desired icon size. Next, create a vector object of the desired icon shape.

For most icons, a simple circle will suffice.

Next, create a new layer and name it “Icon.” In the Icon layer, draw a path to the vector object you created in step 1.

PRO TIP: When creating an SVG icon in Illustrator, be sure to export the icon at the correct size and scale. Additionally, check that your icon does not have any background objects or colors that will not be needed in the final file.

On the Paths panel, set the Stroke weight to 3 and the Fill weight to 1.

Now, in the Icon layer, select the Path tool and click and drag the Path object over the document. When you release the mouse button, the Path object will be positioned over the vector object you created in step 1.

Now, in the Icon layer, Select the Type tool and select the text you would like to use as the icon’s title. With the Type tool selected, change the text layer’s font to “Avenir.”

Finally, in the Icon layer, select the Elliptical Marquee tool and create a small, circular selection around the text. With the selection still active, choose the Add to Path button from the Paths panel and add the selection to the Path object.

When you’re done, you’ll have a simple SVG icon that you can use in your designs.
