How Do I Make a FigJam File in Figma?

Last updated on December 2, 2022 @ 4:42 am

Figma is a vector graphics editor and design tool, which is primarily web-based, although there is a desktop app available. It was created by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace in 2012, while they were both working at Design startup Sugarsync.

The two co-founders had previously worked together on the HTML5 game development platform Bubble.

Figma has been described as “the first interface design tool with real-time collaboration”, and as “Google Docs for designers”. Figma is used by designers at companies such as Uber, Airbnb, Twitter, and Salesforce. As of October 2018, Figma had around 1 million monthly active users.

Figma files have the .fig extension. To create a FigJam file in Figma, you need to:

  1. Create a new file: Click on the ‘+’ icon in the left sidebar or use the shortcut Cmd + N (Mac) / Ctrl + N (Windows).

  2. Click on the ‘Jam’ tab at the top of the screen.

  3. Enter a name for your file and click ‘Create’.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Figma, we recommend that you do not attempt to make a FigJam file. FigJam files are complex and require a significant amount of experience with the software in order to create. If you are not comfortable with Figma, we suggest finding someone who is to help you with this task.
  4. Invite your collaborators: Click on the ‘Invite’ button in the top right corner and enter their email addresses.

  5. Start jamming!
