How Do I Overlay an Image in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 11:03 pm

There are a few different ways to overlay an image in Photoshop, depending on the effect you’re going for. If you want to create a simple, transparent overlay, you can use the ‘Screen’ blending mode.

If you want to add an opaque color overlay, you can use the ‘Color’ or ‘Multiply’ blending modes. And if you want to create a gradient overlay, you can use the ‘Gradient Overlay’ layer style.

To create a transparent image overlay, first open the image you want to use as your base layer, and then open the image you want to use as your overlay. Next, select the ‘Screen’ blending mode from the drop-down menu in the ‘Layers’ palette. Then, adjust the opacity of your top layer until you’re happy with the result.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, or do not have a strong understanding of layers, we recommend that you do not attempt to overlay an image in Photoshop. Layers can be very confusing, and if done incorrectly, you could end up with a mess of pixels.

To add an opaque color overlay, open your base layer and select the ‘Color’ or ‘Multiply’ blending mode from the drop-down menu in the ‘Layers’ palette. Next, choose a color for your overlay using the ‘Foreground Color’ picker.

Then, click on the ‘Gradient Tool’ and choose a gradient type from the options bar. Finally, drag your gradient tool across your image to apply your color overlay.

To create a gradient overlay, open your base layer and select the ‘Gradient Overlay’ layer style from the ‘Layer Styles’ menu. Then, click on the gradient preview bar to open the ‘Gradient Editor’.

Next, choose a gradient type and drag your cursor across the gradient bar to create your desired effect. Finally, click ‘OK’ to apply your gradient overlay.
