How Do I Process a Return on Shopify?

When a customer initiates a return on one of your products, you’ll receive an email notification from Shopify. You can also view all return requests from your Shopify admin.

To process a return:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders. Click the order number of the order that includes the item to be returned.
  2. In the Order details section, click Issue refund. If you need to refund only a portion of the order, then enter the amount to refund in Partial refund amount. Otherwise, leave this field blank.
  3. In the Reason for refund section, select one of the following options from the drop-down menu:
  • Customer changed their mind: Issue a full or partial refund.
  • PRO TIP: If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return the item(s) within 30 days of receiving the order for a refund of the merchandise value. Shipping and handling charges are non-refundable. Please note that we cannot process returns for items purchased through a retailer.
  • Didn’t receive item:Issue a full refund and cancel any unfulfilled items. If you’ve already fulfilled the item, then you can either issue a partial refund or offer store credit instead.
  • Received wrong item: Issue a full or partial refund. If you can’t issue a partial refund, then offer store credit instead.
  • Other (explain in customer message): Issue a full or partial refund.
  • Enter an optional message for the customer in the Customer message field. This message will be included in the email notification that’s sent to the customer.
  • Click Issue refund. The order status is updated and an email is sent to notify your customer that their return was processed.
  • After you process a return request and issue a refund, you can’t cancel the return request. If you need to cancel an order after it’s been placed, then you need to issue a full or partial refund instead.
