How Do You Detach an Instance in Figma?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 9:43 pm

In Figma, there are two ways to detach an instance. The first way is to right-click on the instance and select “Detach from Parent.” The second way is to select the instance and press “Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+P.”

When you detach an instance, it becomes its own independent object. You can move it, resize it, and change its style without affecting other instances of that object.

To reattach an instance, simply select it and press “Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+P” again. You can also reattach an instance by dragging it onto another object.

PRO TIP: If you are working on a design in Figma and need to detach an instance, be aware that this will break the connection between the original instance and any other instances that were created from it. This could cause problems if you need to make changes to the design later on.
