How do you make a puzzle piece in Illustrator?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 7:10 pm

Making a puzzle piece in Illustrator is fairly simple. Open the Illustrator file you will be working with, and create a new document.

Select the Rectangle tool (M), and create a 100x100px rectangle. Select the Ellipse tool (L), and create an 80x80px ellipse.

With the Rectangle and Ellipse still selected, go to the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder), and click on the Horizontal Alignment button (the third from the top). Select the middle of the rectangle, and the top of the ellipse, and click on the Copy button (CTRL+C).

Go back to the original document, and select the Rectangle tool (M), and position it so that it is just left of the top-left corner of the ellipse. With the Selection tool (V), click on the rectangle, and drag it down so that it covers the entire ellipse.

Select the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder), and click on the Vertical Alignment button (the third from the top). With the Selection tool (V), click on the rectangle, and drag it up so that it covers the entire ellipse.

PRO TIP: This puzzle piece may look simple, but it can be tricky to make in Illustrator. If you’re not careful, you may end up with a piece that doesn’t fit together correctly. Follow the steps carefully and take your time to get the best results.

Select the fill color of your choice (I used black), and with the Rectangle still selected, go to the Transparency panel (Window > Transparency), and change the opacity to 70%.

Finally, select the Stroke panel (Window > Stroke), and change the color to black. Click on the OK button to apply your changes.

Your puzzle piece is now complete! To finish it off, go to the Effect menu (Window > Effect), and select Blur. Enter a value of 10px, and click on the OK button to apply the effect.

Your puzzle piece is now ready to use in your Illustrator file. To finish off, you can add a border around it, or add a text box and label it.

Conclusion

Making a puzzle piece in Illustrator is fairly simple. By following these steps, you can create a simple but effective puzzle piece.
