Why Can’t I Edit My Text in Photoshop?

It’s a common question Photoshop beginners ask, and there’s a simple answer: By default, Photoshop text layers are locked, which means you cannot edit the text. The reason Photoshop locks text layers is to prevent accidental changes to the text. Once you unlock a text layer, you can edit the text just like any other layer.

To unlock a text layer, simply click on the “Lock” icon in the Layers panel. This will unlock the layer and allow you to make changes to the text. 1. Can't edit text error.

PRO TIP: If you are trying to edit text in Photoshop and it doesn’t seem to be working, it’s likely because you’re working on a background layer. Background layers cannot be edited, so you’ll need to create a new layer or convert the background layer to a normal layer before you’ll be able to edit it.
