Can You Export a Figma Prototype as a Video?

Last updated on November 25, 2022 @ 12:04 am

As a design tool, Figma is unrivaled. It’s packed with features, it’s easy to use, and it’s free.

But one thing it doesn’t do well is export prototypes as videos.

There are many reasons why you might want to export a Figma prototype as a video. Perhaps you want to share it with someone who doesn’t have Figma, or you want to post it online. Whatever the reason, there’s no built-in way to do it in Figma.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, though. There are a few workarounds that will allow you to export your Figma prototype as a video.

Method 1: Record your screen

The simplest way to export a Figma prototype as a video is to record your screen as you interact with the prototype. There are many screen recording tools available, both free and paid. We recommend using Loom, which is free and easy to use.

PRO TIP: When exporting a Figma prototype as a video, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the video will only export at 30fps, so any animations in your prototype will appear choppier in the video version. Additionally, any audio that is part of your prototype will not be exported with the video. Finally, only the currently visible area of your prototype will be exported – so if you have any off-screen elements, they will not be included in the video.

Once you have Loom installed, open your Figma prototype in the browser and press “Record Video” in the Loom app. Then, simply interact with your prototype as you would normally. When you’re done, press “Stop Recording” and Loom will automatically save your video.

Method 2: Use an online service

If you don’t want to install any software, there are online services that will allow you to record your screen and export the video. One of our favorites is CloudApp. It has a free plan that allows you to record up to 5 minutes of video.

Method 3: Use QuickTime Player (Mac only)

If you’re on a Mac, you can use QuickTime Player to record your screen and export the video. Open QuickTime Player and select “New Screen Recording” from the File menu. Then, click the arrow next to the Record button and select your Figma prototype from the drop-down menu.

Once you start recording, QuickTime will capture everything that happens on your screen, including your interactions with the Figma prototype.

To stop recording, press Command + Control + Esc (Escape). QuickTime will then prompt you to save the recording.

Method 4: Use an extension

If you don’t mind spending a few dollars, there are extensions that will allow you to export your Figma prototypes as videos.

One of our favorites is ScreenToGif. It’s available for both Windows and macOS, and it can export GIFs or MP4 videos.

Another good option is LiceCap, which is available for Windows only.

Both ScreenToGif and LiceCap have free trials, so you can try them before you buy.

Conclusion:
You can export a Figma prototype as a video by recording your screen or using an extension like ScreenToGif or LiceCap.
