How Do I Make a Top Layer Transparent in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 4:20 pm

There are a few ways to make a top layer transparent in Photoshop. One way is to use the ‘Layer Mask’ tool. With the layer mask selected, click on the ‘Add Layer Mask’ icon at the bottom of the ‘Layers’ panel. This will create a white layer mask thumbnail next to your layer.

Next, select the brush tool and set your foreground color to black. Paint over the areas of the image you want to be transparent. The black areas will become transparent, revealing the layers below. You can also use the eraser tool to erase parts of the top layer.

Another way to make a top layer transparent is to change the ‘Blend Mode’ of the layer. To do this, select the layer you want to make transparent in the ‘Layers’ panel and then click on the drop-down menu next to ‘Normal’ at the top of the panel.

There are a variety of blend modes you can choose from, each with a different effect. Experiment with each one until you find one that gives you the transparency effect you’re looking for.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, making a top layer transparent in Photoshop can result in losing important image data. Be sure to save a copy of your file before attempting this technique, and work on a duplicate layer if possible.
