How Do You Unlink a Smart Object in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 1:43 pm

In Photoshop, you can unlink a smart object by right-clicking on the layer and selecting “Edit Contents.” This will open the contents of the smart object in a new window.

From here, you can make changes to the layer without affecting the original smart object. To save your changes, simply close the window and Photoshop will automatically update the smart object.

PRO TIP: If you unlink a smart object in Photoshop, you will no longer be able to edit the object using smart filters or edit the layer style options.

If you need to make more drastic changes to a smart object, you can also unlink it by selecting “Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Linked Layer.” This will convert the smart object into a normal layer, which you can then edit as you please.

However, keep in mind that this cannot be undone, so be sure that you really need to make these changes before proceeding.
