As a designer, you’re probably well aware of the power of color. The right colors can convey emotion, set the tone for a piece, and even influence how someone perceives an image.
But what if you want to take color one step further and use it to create interesting effects or add emphasis to certain elements in an image? That’s where Photoshop’s color overlay feature comes in.
With color overlay, you can quickly and easily add a splash of color to any image. Here’s a quick rundown on how to use this powerful tool.
First, open your image in Photoshop and select the layer that you want to add color to. Then, go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color.
A new window will pop up where you can select the color you want to use for your overlay. Once you’ve chosen a color, click OK.
You’ll now see your color overlay layer appear in the Layers panel. To adjust the opacity of your color overlay, simply go to Layer > Layer Style > Opacity and enter a value between 0 and 100%. A lower opacity will make your color more transparent, while a higher opacity will make it more opaque.
You can also change the blend mode of your color overlay layer to create different effects. To do this, go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Mode and choose from one of the many options available. Experiment with different blend modes to see what works best for your image.
Finally, if you want to add some extra flair to your image, you can use the gradient tool to create a gradient overlay. Simply select the Gradient tool from the toolbar and then click and drag across your image to create a gradient. You can adjust the opacity and blend mode of your gradient just like you did with your solid color overlay.
