How do I point my GoDaddy domain to Linode?

Last updated on September 4, 2023 @ 10:16 am

There is one straightforward way that you can point your GoDaddy domain to Linode. That is to use the Linode Manager. To do that, follow these simple steps:

1. First, go to your Domain Portfolio in GoDaddy and select the domain link that you want to point to Linode.

2. Then, on the next page that will appear, go to the DNS tab and select the Nameservers option. From there, click on the “Change Nameservers” button.

NOTE: Nameservers control where your DNS is hosted, allowing you to modify DNS records and connect domains to IP addresses in a human-friendly way to direct internet traffic.

3. In the Edit nameservers window that will appear, select the “I’ll use my own nameservers” option and input Linode’s nameservers in the fields provided. Here are Linode’s nameservers:

  •  ns1.linode.com
  • ns2.linode.com
  • ns3.linode.com
  • ns4.linode.com
  • ns5.linode.com

4. A new pop-up window will then appear, asking you to confirm the update on the nameservers. Simply click on the “Continue” button to confirm.

5. Once done setting up the nameservers in your GoDaddy domain, proceed to your Linode Manager and create an A record for your domain. To do this, select the “Domains” option from the left panel of your Linode Dashboard. Then, click on the “Create Domain” button.

NOTE: An “A Record” in DNS settings maps your domain to an IP address, ensuring your site is accessible online.

6. Input the details of your domain and click on the “Create Domain” button.

7. After creating your domain, you will be redirected to the Domains page. Scroll down to the A/AAAA Record section and click on the “Add An A/AAAA Record” button.

8. In the Create A/AAAA Record panel that will appear, you will be prompted to provide the hostname or IP address of your Linode. You can leave the hostname field empty and input your Linode’s IP Address on the field provided. After that, click on the “Save” button. And that’s it!

PRO TIP: If you are pointing your GoDaddy domain to Linode, please be aware that you need to set the A record for your domain to the IP address of your Linode server. You will also need to set up a web server on your Linode server and configure it to serve your website. Please see the Linode documentation for more information on how to do this.
