How Do I Convert NEF Files to JPEG in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 11:42 pm

NEF files are Raw Image files used by Nikon digital cameras. They are similar to CR2 files used by Canon cameras, and contain the unprocessed image data captured by the camera’s sensor.

NEF files are not viewable in most image viewing programs, and must be converted to a more common format such as JPEG before they can be viewed or edited. Photoshop is one of the few programs that can open and edit NEF files, and can easily convert them to JPEG format.

To convert a NEF file to JPEG in Photoshop, open the file in Photoshop and go to File > Save As. In the “Format” drop-down menu, select “JPEG.” You can also choose to change the quality settings for the JPEG image, which will affect its file size. A higher quality setting will result in a larger file size, while a lower quality setting will result in a smaller file size.

Once you have selected the appropriate settings, click “Save” to save the NEF file as a JPEG. The JPEG image will now be viewable in any image viewing or editing program.

In conclusion, converting NEF files to JPEG in Photoshop is a simple process. Just open the file in Photoshop and go to File > Save As.

In the “Format” drop-down menu, select “JPEG.” You can also choose to change the quality settings for the JPEG image, which will affect its file size. Once you have selected the appropriate settings, click “Save” to save the NEF file as a JPEG.

PRO TIP: When opening NEF files in Photoshop, the software will automatically convert the file to a JPEG. However, this process can significantly reduce the quality of the image. It is therefore advisable to use a dedicated NEF converter tool to convert NEF files to JPEG before opening them in Photoshop.
